A pair of flip flops or sneakers is not practical when planning kayaking in the ocean, although a shoe is a necessity. If you participate in water sports activities either for fun or as a profession, you must invest in good water shoes. Unlike sneakers or other types of shoes, water shoes are specially designed for water and are robust and temperature adapted.
If you are already out in the market trying to find one then this is a good move. But the market is flooded with so many types and brands that without a proper guide you will not be able to find the most suitable for you.
How to choose the best
When looking for a water shoe, there are a number of things you need to look into.
This is a basic feature for all regular water shoes and it is what marks the boundary with the typical summer shoes. Quite a few brands do not have toe protection, so watch out before you make a purchase.
- Somewhat different leather
If you are a leather enthusiast, this is the part where you let go. Leather shoes of water absorb water which makes them heavier and makes your feet too chilly. In addition, continuous immersion in water and out will eventually tear down the leather.
This is something the most forgotten feature. Any water shoes should have a thick sole, not a thickness of 3 mm. The thickness protects your feet when you walk on sharp edges and will improve traction.
Maybe some brands known with the mentioned features may limit your search. Some well-known brands include Vibram, Keen and Teva.
